7 End of Year Algebra Activity Ideas That Keep Students Engaged

By the time May and June roll around, Algebra 1 classrooms start to feel a little different. Testing is finished, schedules start to get unpredictable, and students are already thinking about summer. You’ve reached a point where you want to keep learning meaningful but also know that traditional lessons or long review packets are just not going to work this time of year. That’s why it helps to have an end of year algebra activity ready that keeps students engaged while still reinforcing important math skills.

I have found that the activities that work best at the end of the year usually involve problem solving, collaboration, and opportunities for students to talk about their thinking. When students can apply algebra to real situations or analyze how problems are solved, they tend to stay more invested in the lesson. Here are some activities that work especially well during the last weeks of Algebra 1.

One effective end-of-year activity is giving students real situations where they need to create equations or inequalities from a word problem rather than simply solving problems that are already set up for them.

At this point in the year, students benefit from opportunities to pull together several skills at once and apply them in a meaningful context. This Algebra 1 project tasks students with writing and solving linear inequalities to create a budget for a backyard renovation.

This type of lesson works particularly well as a partner activity or a small group problem-solving day. Your students will be able to have worthwhile conversations about different strategies and even mistakes they’ve made.

“Plan a Vacation” Algebra Project

Projects are a great way to wrap up the year because they give students the opportunity to apply algebra in a way that feels relevant and engaging. In this activity, students plan a vacation while modeling different costs using linear equations. As they work through the task, they analyze travel expenses, compare different options, and use math to justify their decisions.

This type of project naturally combines algebra with problem solving and discussion, which makes students more invested in their learning and understanding. You can use a project like this during review week, after state testing, or any time when you want students collaborating and applying what they have learned.

A Systems of Equations Project That Feels Different from Normal Classwork

Another engaging end of year algebra activity is this systems of equations project that encourages students to think more deeply about the relevance linear systems have to real life. Because the task feels more like a challenge than a worksheet, many students become more engaged and motivated to solve the problem.

By the end of the course, students have typically learned multiple strategies for solving systems, but they do not always have the opportunity to apply those strategies in a larger, meaningful task.

With this project, students work together to create their own food truck and sustain a profitable business. This topic could be modified based on your students’ interests or skill level. If you’re looking for a done-for-you end of year algebra activity, check out this food truck project.

Error Analysis: Let Students Be the Teacher

Error analysis is one of the most underrated math activities, and it can be especially effective at the end of the year. This is a great way to study and review for final exams because your students will be analyzing mistakes they might actually make on the test.

You can run this lesson in several different ways. Some teachers use it as a station activity where students rotate around the room, while others prefer to have students work in pairs or small groups to discuss each problem together.

Movement-Based Review with Task Cards

During the last weeks of school, students often benefit from activities that allow them to move around the classroom while still reviewing key concepts. Task cards can be turned into an engaging end of year algebra activity because they make it easy to set up stations, partner challenges, or rotating review activities.

As students move from one problem to the next, they stay more engaged and focused than they might during a traditional worksheet review. This format also encourages discussion and collaboration as students compare strategies and solutions.

Digital Activities for Those Unpredictable End-of-Year Days

Every teacher experiences the unpredictable days that tend to happen near the end of the school year. Field trips, assemblies, testing schedules, and fluctuating attendance can make it difficult to plan a traditional lesson. Having a digital end of year algebra activity ready can make those days much easier to manage.

Digital activities allow students to work independently while still practicing important skills, and they often require very little preparation from the teacher.

One option is a digital review escape room that guides students through a self-checking adventure! Check out a few of my students favorites ⬇️

Another engaging option is a self-checking mystery picture activity that motivates students to complete each problem accurately as they work through the assignment.

These types of lessons are especially helpful when you need something flexible that students can complete at their own pace.

How to Choose the Right End of Year Algebra Activity

Not every class needs the same type of activity at the end of the year, so it can be helpful to think about what your students need most in those final weeks. Some classes benefit most from collaborative projects and discussion-based activities where students can explain their thinking and learn from each other. Other classes may respond better to shorter activities that involve movement or digital practice.

The key is choosing lessons that still encourage students to think, reason, and apply what they have learned, even when everyone is starting to look forward to summer break.

How to Choose the Right End of Year Algebra Activity

The last few weeks of Algebra 1 do not have to feel like a waiting period before summer begins. A well-designed end of year algebra activity can help students apply the skills they have learned, explain their reasoning, and see how algebra connects to real situations outside the classroom.

In many cases, these lessons end up being some of the most engaging and memorable moments of the entire school year. If you’re looking for an Algebra 1 review packet to help your students practice the skills they need in Algebra 2, check out this blog post.
