5 Activities to Help Your Students Master Compound Inequalities

Compound inequalities are a confusing and abstract concept for Algebra 1 students to wrap their minds around. For many of our students, it’s the first time that they see that x has multiple solutions. 

The idea that there can and will be multiple solutions to a problem is an incredibly important concept to teach our students. Understanding the existence of two solutions is a foundational skill that will help them better understand polynomials and functions for their future in Algebra 1 and 2.

Introducing Compound Inequalities

So let’s talk about ways to introduce compound inequalities to your Algebra 1 students. If you’re teaching compound inequalities after basic inequalities, a great place to start is “or” problems. Here’s an example:
