5 First Week of Algebra 2 Activities for Back to School

The first week of Algebra 2 can feel a little intimidating for both teachers and students. Some students walk in confident and ready to go, while others are already nervous about the word “Algebra” being in the course title again. On top of that, many classes include students coming in with very different skill levels and retention from Algebra 1.

Instead of rushing straight into content, the beginning of the year is the perfect time to build classroom culture, reestablish problem-solving habits, and help students ease back into thinking about math. The right first week activities can increase engagement, lower math anxiety, and give you valuable insight into your students’ strengths and gaps before the curriculum really picks up speed.

In this post, you’ll find engaging first week of Algebra 2 activities that go beyond basic icebreakers. These ideas are designed to encourage collaboration, spark critical thinking, and help students build confidence from day one while still keeping math at the center of your classroom.

Algebra 1 Spiral Review Task Cards

Take one or two periods to review Algebra 1 standards that are essential for your students’ success in Algebra 2. This activity has 48 standards-aligned spiraled task cards so your students can practice independently or in small groups.

I would recommend just using the first half of Set 1 which includes equations, inequalities, linear functions, and systems of equations. This is a good starting point for the topics you’ll likely be covering at the beginning of the year. If you start with Set 1, you can save Set 2 for review before you start reviewing exponent properties, polynomial expressions, and solving quadratics.

You’ll also receive a bonus whole group guided lesson if you need a more structured Algebra 1 final exam review. This no prep lesson includes the same task cards with one on each lesson slide so your students can work through the problems as a class and get immediate feedback from you.

Multi Step Equations Digital Activity

Start with a simple, no prep activity for the first week of Algebra 2. This digital mystery picture is self-checking for independent practice. When your students answer a problem correctly, the answer box turns green and pieces of the mystery picture appear. They know the activity is complete when the full picture is filled in!

Your students should all feel confident solving multi step equations by the start of Algebra 2. If not, this is where you’ll be able to catch the gaps in foundational algebra skills before digging into the main Algebra 2 content.

Compound Inequalities Card Sort

Getting started with compound inequalities is a great segue into absolute value equations and inequalities. Some Algebra 1 curriculums include compound inequalities, so your students may have seen this before.

However, if they haven’t this will be their first time seeing equations and inequalities with multiple solutions. This can often be a learning curve for students so reviewing compound inequalities in a form that your students are familiar with can be helpful before jumping straight into the Algebra 2 curriculum.

Compound Inequalities Notes & Worksheets

Do your students need more practice with compound inequalities? This complete lesson plan includes guided notes and worksheets with practice problems. These notes introduce solving and graphing compound inequalities using both “and” and “or”.

Absolute Value Equations Notes

I love starting the main curriculum during the first week of school. It sets the tone for the rest of the year and gets students into a routine more quickly. These guided notes and worksheets break down solving absolute value equations and give students plenty of practice problems to work through independently or with a partner.

Final Thoughts About These First Week of Algebra 2 Activities

The first week of Algebra 2 can be more than just ice breakers and going through the syllabus. With the right activities, you can create a classroom environment where students feel challenged, supported, and willing to participate from the very beginning.
